Hi fellow board game geeks!

On the 7th and 8th of November, the annual Dutch board game event 'Spellenspektakel' took place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Being a big board game fan, I was very excited and couldn't wait for these days to finally arrive. But, at long last, they did!

What can one exactly do at this event, you ask? Well... play, buy and smell board games, card games, party games and other cool stuff of course!

As is customary at Spellenspektakel, upon our arrival we were presented with a complimentary goodie-bag, containing a bunch of flyers, some K'nex and a free game. This year, the free game is a puzzle comprised out of cards. But, unlike normal puzzles, you don't place the cards next to each other in an orderly fashion. No sir, instead, you have to put the cards partly on top of each other to complete the puzzle.

When we finally got our heads out of the bag, we gazed around and saw a giant hall filled with tables and stands, all covered in games; a real gamers' paradise.

First thing we noticed was that there were a lot of kids present at the event on Saturday. They even created a kiddy garden, so parents can play games while their kids can play to their hearts content, under supervision of course. They also created a crafts table for the little ones and man, it really got busy over there! Although this was all very cool, we couldn't imagine this being the reason that so many kids were there. But then, the answer presented itself: THE MINIONS! OMG, they were really there! Kids were running towards them in a frenzy, just to get their picture taken with them! But, as is mostly the case with famous people, the minions eventually had to go and so we continued our journey through the hall.

Next, we passed the 'bordspelmania.nl' stand. Every year, they have a puzzle containing a number of pictures. If you can find out which picture belongs to which game, you can win some prizes. All the games displayed on the puzzle could be found on the convention floor.

The convention floor was huge, and it contained a wide variety of stands, featuring:
- Secondhand games
- Board and card games to play
- Lego
- Magic tricks
- Game prototypes
- Sale stands
- And, of course, a place where you could get hot and cold beverages

And if one floor wasn't enough, there is even a second floor. On this floor you could find:
- Magic: the gathering cards for sale and Magic: the Gathering tournaments
- Other board and card games to play
- and a contest, in which you could win a free ticket to Zuiderspel

Zuiderspel is a board game convention in Koningshof, veldhoven near Eindhoven,The Netherlands, which takes place on the 20th of March 2016. This stand had a game that you could play with up to four people. Every player received four dice was asked to roll the dice, one at a time. Depending on what area of the table it landed in, you got 0x, 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x your die result. It is with no small amount of pride that I can tell you: I won!

The major advantage of shopping at this convention is that you can try before you buy! (Or just try and never buy, but that's up to you). So, what did we buy, you ask? Well… I'm a big fan of “Mice and Mystics”. This is a story driven dungeon crawler with mice, rats, cockroaches and even Brodie the cat. We got that one, together with its stand alone expansion set: Tail Feathers, which was just officially released at “Spiel” (the biggest board game convention in the world, held in Essen, Germany) four weeks ago. So it was a big surprise that we could already purchase it at Spellenspektakel, but we were glad we could! Tail Feathers is a story-driven miniature battle game, set in the world of Mice and Mystics.

There is so much more I could tell you about my day at Spellenspektakel 2015, but why not go for yourself next year and maybe get yourself a discount or 2 while having an absolutely awesome day!
