MARIO KART 8 DELUXE

By Alex "Scorpidvenom" Adriaens on May 4, 2017

After playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild for multiple hours during the course of the past weeks it was time to try a new Switch title. And here it is: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! Let's see if it will hold up to my expectation of a true Nintendo title.

In the past, I remember Mario Kart as being an awesome series of games! I played it on handheld as well as other Nintendo consoles and it was so much fun! Mario Kart was so challenging and, at the same time, it could be so frustrating that it made me want to throw the console in question out the window onto a concrete floor, ten stories down. But to be honest, I love it! A game like this needs to be a challenge! Not only against the CPU but also against other gamers in your living room and Online. This is what has made Mario Kart immensely popular through the years.

So, when I got my copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, my plan was to finish the 50cc course first and work my way up to the 200cc course. Please let me explain to you how that went. When you start a new single player race, you can choose many different racers. Even MII characters you have created can be used to race. In total there are 48 characters to choose from! Next you can pick a vehicle. Some are goofy, some are great looking cars and there are also scooters to pick from. These vehicles can be used with different kind of tires and parachutes.

To make it even more interesting, every choice you make here makes a difference. The characters are divided in light, medium and heavyweight, and the tires and parachute each have their own unique stats making your cool ride faster, lighter, have more grip or accelerate faster. If you press the '+' key in the selection screen you can see how your choices make a difference in your overall selection.

Next you can choose one of the cups to compete in. Each cup is divided into 4 tracks. When you get 3 stars for each track (you'll have to be first to cross the finish line to do so) then you are the winner. The tracks are really beautiful in colours and you can practically taste the Nintendo style. There are a lot of shortcuts to take and power-ups to pick-up which contain coins, Koopa shells to fire at your opponent, invincibility star, mushrooms to speed up and much, much more awesome stuff!

I must say, playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a real blast! There is even an option to select auto-steering, which prevents you from bouncing your cute Rosalina or Peach from the track, right into the abyss. This makes it fun for kids to play along. Another one is auto-acceleration so you can focus on steering and hitting your opponent. And you can use your joy-con controllers like a steering wheel motion controller. It does feel like you're really racing on the track yourself.

My first Multiplayer match was against my wife Jolanda. She isn't a gamer but I found out that Mario Kart was one of the few games she did play in the past. So I thought, let's challenge her to a match! And damned if it isn't true: she defeated me with her Rosalina. The excitement to play against each other in Mario Kart is unique on its own. There is way more multiplayer fun like this in the form of online race mode, balloon blast where you have to take down your opponent's balloons, Bob-omb Blast that let you pick many bombs to shoot, Coin Rush to collect as many coins as you can and many more.

You just can't deny that there is a lot to do in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the game is jam-packed with fun details and extra's! It's a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch, while staying true to its legacy. I can't wait to take my switch outdoor and challenge some other gamers to a race because this is a really cool multiplayer game online as well in Local mode. I believe that many of you will find this to be one of the best kart games there is on the market today!

Oh, and here is just a little tip for our readers: If you use your Amiibo in the Amiibo section on the main screen, you can unlock some cool race outfits for your racers!
