THE KINDRED

By Dennis "CallMeBackdraft" Aspers on October 27, 2016

There are a lot of games that grant you the ability to build cities; there are also a lot of games that make you hunt, gather and craft your digital behind off. And now there is a game that takes all of these abilities and makes you do everything at once! This game is called The Kindred, and is developed by indie developer Persistent Studios. Since February of this year, The Kindred is available on Steam early access.

The Kindred is a sandbox game that puts you in a voxel world, which is filled to the brim with vibrant colors. As soon as you create your world, which is randomly generated every time you start a new game, you’ll have to split all the different jobs between your kin. Kin are the inhabitants of the world and you will be responsible for keeping them alive and building a thriving city for them to live in. By giving them jobs like hunting, mining and cooking for instance, you can make sure that everything gets done in a timely fashion.

After you have split the jobs as evenly as possible, you can start by setting up farmlands, mining quarries and crafting facilities. Every time you allocate an area for any of these jobs you can then decide which of your kin will be dedicated to completing the work there. Pretty soon after starting your game, you will find out that you will have to manage both your working force and food supply as best as you can, or else nothing will get done properly and your kin will soon starve because of dwindling food supplies. And we wouldn’t want that to happen, now would we?

Seeing as this is a sandbox game, the world is your oyster and as long as you keep the bellies of the people filled, they will happily gather the resources you need to build the most grandest of cities this, or any, world has ever seen! When your city becomes bigger and bigger, you’ll have another resource that gets thrown in the mix. This resource comes in the form of electricity; this means you’ll have to construct huge powerplants, battery banks and miles and miles of wiring to ensure the lights stay on in both the humble abodes and the grand villas you have built for your city's inhabitants.

Unlike most (if not all) other city building games, you are not limited by housing types, designed by the developers. This is mainly because the game is voxel based. Voxel type gameplay is usually familiar with the few people who play a ‘little-known’ game named Minecraft. In this genre, the building creativity in the game is only limited by your own imagination. Being one of the aforementioned voxel-based games, The Kindred is no exception to this rule; you can build your houses block by block if you want to make sure your city will look exactly the way you want it to look, which I think is always a really, really cool feature!

The Kindred is a game I would heartily recommend to any and all gamers who are into resource management and city building games. It grants you an outlet for your creativity and keeps you challenged at the same time. And let’s be honest: with a combination like that, you just can’t go wrong!
