I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning! And that's great because I am going to review Burnin' Rubber 5 HD. Now, normally the term "burnin' rubber" is used to describe driving at breakneck speed, but in the case of this game, the rubber on your car can actually be on fire... as a result of a rocket impact! So put your pedal to the metal and hold on tight... here we go!

The Burnin' Rubber game series has been online since 2007 and since then, all Burnin'Rubber games have been exclusively developed for online play. The downside to this approach was that the developers always had to cut stuff out of the game in order to tone down the content to a point where it could be played online. Because of this, the released version of the games were never the same as the awesome plans the developers had when conceiving them. But no more! Utrecht, the Netherlands based independent developer Xform now proudly presents their full HD Remaster of Burnin' Rubber 5!

And boy, does Burnin' Rubber have a lot of challenges in store for you! The game offers you campaign challenges and daily challenges. The difference between campaign and daily challenges is that daily challenges unlock unique cars and let you level up more quickly than the standard campaign challenges would. In these daily challenges, you'll have to complete tasks to unlock new tracks and vehicles. These challenges come in three different variations: Race, Team VS and Boss Battles.

Boss battles, I hear you ask? Yes, in Burnin' Rubber 5, you can complete Boss Battles while driving your car. It is really an awesome challenge! Two cars, one track and only one driver will be able to reach the finish in one, hopefully not completely burnt-out, piece. Both cars zoom around the track while you make your laps. But there's a twist; you'll need to shoot whatever you have weapons-wise at the boss and defeat him before you run out of time (or life!). It's though, it's wild and it's hilarious!

During the race challenges, the main goal is to finish first. Sounds simple enough, but let me tell you that it is easier said than done. It's not that hard to get out in front. But, and this is important, when you're in the first place, all the other racers are behind you. Yes, yes, I know that this is no surprise, but you need to keep in mind that your opponents have weapons mounted to their mechanical monsters of death and that you are nothing but an easy target to them. Lucky for you, there are a couple of ways to turn the odds in your favor. You can collect certain objects along the way like speed boosts, ammo and the very needed repair object.

The Team VS challenges are similar to the boss battles, but now you and your opponents are each playing as a team of four cars. The first team to earn a certain amount of takedowns is crowned the winner. By the way, the names of the drivers of the other team were Paul, John, Ringo and George. So, as an added bonus, I can finally say I really got to kick The Beatles' butts!

When you think car, you think garage. Especially if you're locked in vehicular combat round after round. And Burnin' Rubber 5 HD is no exception to this rule. In the aforementioned garage, you can select a car and buy weapons for it. I think it's cool that you can choose where on your car you want to place certain weapons. That way, you can customize your car a little bit more to suit your own style. Your options are limited at the start of the game of course, but as you progress through the game more and more options are added to the roster. Not only the weapons can be changed, you can also upgrade your car with stuff like: engine power, better armor and the possibility to carry more ammo. And let's not forget the paint jobs! With every challenge you complete, you'll earn XP to level up. You might even be rewarded with a new car or weapon.

Every car has its own unique upgrade options and there are a lot of cars to unlock. Note that all your upgrades and placed weapons are equipped to a certain car, so if you choose to switch cars, these upgrades are not automatically transferred. Weapons can be unequipped and placed on another vehicle. You can also choose buy new ones and have several cars ready to race. Upgrades can't be undone, so choose wisely. But then again, if you pay a bit of attention to the dollar symbol on the road while driving a circuit, you can make enough money to buy tons of new weapons and upgrades.

Burnin' Rubber 5 HD adds an excellent game to race game genre. It combines Destruction Derby and Vigilante 8 and this combination works like a charm. With so many content to unlock and awesome types of challenges, Burnin' Rubber 5 HD is really an unique racing game!
