SEASONS AFTER FALL

A couple of weeks ago, Ferry "Sadhonker" Adams send me a trailer of a game called Seasons after Fall by email, with the message: "I think this is a game for you, there is a cute looking fox in it." And yes, after I saw the trailer I immediately fell in love with the fox!

This week, the moment was finally here; I could play the game with the cute fox. (which, incidentally, I personally think would have also been a very good title for the game.) In any case, it was time to play Seasons after Fall! Immediately upon starting the game, it becomes clear that things are not at all well in the world. The spirits of the four seasons have vanished and a little seed is chosen to set things straight and bring the spirits back. But what can a little seed do? How is it supposed to restore everything that has gone wrong?

But then the cute fox enters the stage. The seed and the fox become one and together they start their great adventure. The controls of this platform game are very simple, the fox can jump, bark and walk left or right. (and later on you can change the seasons, but we'll come to that in a minute) I love that this game has controller support, but if you want to you can play Seasons after Fall using your keyboard.

Your goal is to reunite the spirits of the four seasons and every time you bring one of the spirits back, you're able to use the power of that specific season and manipulate the world around you accordingly. For example, if you want to cross a river, you change the current season to winter. It gets really cold, the river freezes over and you can walk across the ice. Every new season offers you an array of new possibilities which can help you solve puzzles and continue your way towards the next spirit.

As the title might reveal, you start with Fall. After that you'll collect Winter, Spring and eventually Summer. With the power of Fall you can make mushrooms appear and use them as a platform to reach higher places. Winter will freeze water. In Spring it rains a lot, so with this ability you can raise water levels and in Summer you can grow plants and trees.

Seasons after Fall is set in a beautiful fantasy world with bright colors, which will change when you manipulate the seasons. Together with an enchanting soundtrack recorded by a live string quartet, this magical world is one you'll really want to explore. The world the developers created is an experience itself.

But don't think for a minute that Seasons after Fall is an easy game. Yes, it starts off pretty easy and straight forward, but soon you'll have to use that grey matter you call your brain to continue your way and find the spirits. I like the fact that there are no enemies in this game, which adds a relaxing feeling to playing it. Basically, there are no distractions and no dangers. There is only you in this extremely beautiful and magical world.

Seasons after Fall is a truly fantastic game with a good story and, as I've already mentioned, an awesome visual style. If you like games like Journey and N.E.R.O., then this game should really be your cup of tea!
