UNCHARTED 4: MULTIPLAYER BETA

Last week, the news that Uncharted 4’s release was going to be pushed back two more weeks made our very own Diana quite sad. Luckily, to comfort her, she was able to play the open beta of the game’s multiplayer mode last weekend. So of course, she and Magic Mike downloaded this Stress Test (as Naughty Dog calls it) and prepared for a big round of good old ass kicking!

I’m a big fan of the Uncharted series. I played all the games in the series at least 10 times by now and I love them all! The humor, the action and the anti-hero one-liners of Nathan Drake; it’s all just great stuff! So it might not come as a surprise that I can hardly wait for Uncharted 4 to be released. Magic Mike knows Uncharted only from streams and trailers, but after playing this beta he stole my copy of Uncharted – The Nathan Drake Collection. Maybe I can steal it back, when I drop by for a birthday party or something.

Back to the Multiplayer Stress Test. We started by playing a tutorial, which explains the basics of the multiplayer and how to use the store. These basics are pretty straight forward and simple. We immediately get to experience the latest addition to Drake’s arsenal; the grappling hook. You can use this device to swing from side to side and climb up and down walls. When the grappling hook icon appears you can shoot your hook with R1 and start climbing or swinging to get where you want to go.

While playing this test version, we visited three different maps: a jungle environment, a town and a sort of building which reminded me of the Taj Mahal. These environments made one thing abundantly clear: We can expect a lot of breathtaking scenery in Uncharted 4. And if I know Naughty Dog (which I think I do by now), we will not be disappointed!

Every round we played featured 5 vs. 5 gameplay. After the teams are selected you must first choose what role you’d like to play that match, such as Assault, Support, Healer, etc. After making this choice, you’re divided in two teams. If you were placed in the ‘good guys’ team, you could play as Nathan Drake, Sully, Elena and other heroes. When you were assigned to the ‘bad guys’ team, you could enter the arena as Flynn, Lazarevic, Marlowe and other villains.

Because Naughty Dog wanted as many players as possible partaking in this ‘Stress Test’, they created an open beta for everyone to enjoy, even if you don’t have a PS Plus subscription. I guess that overloaded the servers at some point, so sometimes Magic Mike and I would have to wait a little while before we had enough players to start. Once or twice, while choosing your character, the whole process stopped and we had to start over again.

At one point, we even felt a bit sorry for our opponent, because our team consisted of three players and our opponent’s team was literally made up out of only one player. These moments make me happy; I can laugh out loud when something like this occurs during the beta, knowing full well the developers will fix this in the final version. So please understand that this is strictly a stress test and by no means represents what the final multiplayer experience is going to be like.

This Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Beta offered us a glimps of what will await us when Uncharted 4 is finally released. The gameplay and game mechanics are (as always) smooth and the scenery is more than beautiful. It inspired Magic mike to play the whole series (a very wise decision, as far as I’m concerned) and it only strengthened my beliefs that Uncharted 4 is going to be one awesome journey!
