After two years of having an steady income the last few months were hard for little ol' me. And then this game came along and it didn't get easier. In august I got my last pay check from my former job. We are now at the beginning of November and I can only say: Oh crap, I'm broke! So I am happy I will be starting a new (well-paid) job tomorrow! At first, I will only be working on a part-time basis, so I will get some steady income again. But, for this month it is just like in this next game: Crap! I'm broke: Out of Pocket!

Being an economics teacher, I could use this game as an assignment for my classes, and I even would if the school board condoned it. Why? Because it will give the kids (aged 15-18) a good view of how hard life can be if you don't have a steady income. For too many people this often is the case. Sometimes because they don't have the right diplomas (kids stay in school; you definitely don't want to be broke) or because of the crappy state of the economy which is still at hand. But okay, too much teacher talk; let's get to the game.

Crap! I'm Broke: Out of Pocket! is a life management game that makes you work for money and for survival. It is the mobile version of the original Crap! I'm Broke game that was released in 2015 and it does give us a run for our money... literally! The game starts easy, your bills are low and you don't have too much stress getting enough money. But soon things start to get harder; mommy stops paying your rent, so you are all on your own. You have to make sure you get enough income to pay your bills and also make sure you don't starve (so eat you pizza or take-away while you have the money).

The overview of the game is easy and simple. You have several screens depending where you are in the game. You are a simple blue man in a nice blue house (I'm blue dabedi dabeda...) Now, the colour blue is usually associated with depression, which is spot on for this game. Because, even though it is a fun game to play, it can be somewhat stressful and even depressing for the main character. When you get further into the game (i.e. after the first 3 easy months), each month starts the same. You get a number of additional bills in the mail. I you get lucky, you will receive money instead of having to pay more. Then the distraction starts, after you opened the mails you get a pop-up with the option to buy stuff with your savings. I know to click it away and confirm the fact that I really don't want to buy stuff. But yeah, this is the same in real life; saving money is hard, because spending it is sooooo much easier.

When you manage to get away from the distraction of the alluring cool and shiny stuff, the real game starts. Making sure you earn enough money to pay your bills is paramount in this game! So, how do you get the money you need? No, no, no! We are not going to rob a bank (good idea, though). We are literally going to work for our money by doing various jobs around town. From flipping burgers too keeping your balance, just do anything and everything to earn money. The further you get, the more jobs will be made available to you. None of these jobs are available all the time, so you'll have to run around town looking for vacancies, hoping you get a "well-paid" job to be able to pay your ever-increasing number of bills.

Just like in real-life, some jobs pay better than others and some are easier to do than others. Each new month, you are constantly hoping to earn enough money within the given time, because you don't want to be in even more debt. Being in debt means you will have to pay even more next month. And if this goes on for too long you will get evicted because you didn't pay the rent for several months. When this happens, you go back to the beginning of the year. Which is the most frustrating aspect of this game, you just start over! Same goes if you starve to death... you just start over. Wait, what?! No save point? There should be something more there, shouldn't there? And, just to add to the stress, the Grim Reaper is never far away, just to make things extra creepy.

After all is said and done, I can only come to the inevitable conclusion that Crap! I'm Broke: Out of Pocket! is a really fun game to play. It is frustrating and stressful, but in a very good way. You only need to take the time to play it. It is best to play one month (or more) at the time. Having to quit in the middle of a job or month is really not constructive. So, for everybody feeling financially secure or for those who are not sure if they are financially secure, just play this game and you will feel more financially secure. If you are completely not financially secure, or sure that you standing at the precipice of a financial disaster, don't play it; you will be too stressed out to enjoy how fun and entertaining this game really is!

Phew, I'm glad I survived that money-making ordeal! That's it for me this month, I will now go back to my real job. See you next time!
