ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON

Besides creating your dream life with the Sims, we have also created our dream theme park with rollercoaster tycoon. We had the most amazing rollercoasters, the most beautiful decorations and the most insane parks this (or any) world had ever seen. Since Februari 23, 2017, Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch revisits this blast from the (somewhat recent) past on your mobile device.

Yay! Rollercoaster Tycoon on my phone! Wait! Hold your horses. Before you start running around and cheering, there is something you will need to know. Yes, it is a Rollercoaster Tycoon game, but it is not the same as the original game. The app game is great, don't get me wrong. It is truly amazing, but just not the same as the one I (and you) played on the pc when we were younger. Let's just start off with mentioning the things I missed in the app game. First of all, and this is something we all did it in the game, building a rollercoaster, not finishing it and still making people go in so you see them get die. Oh, we were so lovable back then. This you can't do in this latest iteration of the Rollercoaster Tycoon game. Or, at least, it is really, really nerve wrecking to build a rollercoaster on such a small screen that you just get around to doing it. Thank god for the blueprints with complete rollercoasters. Slightly less fun, but still good enough.

Besides that, the biggest complaint of the people visiting my park in the pc version of the game was the fact that it was a mess all the time. You just couldn't have enough trashcans nor janitors walking around cleaning the vomit from the visitors. Yeah, you don't have that problem now because when building a pathway you automatically get trashcans. The only part you will be missing are the janitors and other personnel. And you can't pick them up any more and drop them at a random place (just as you could do with visitors). No, this game is all about putting down rides and shops. You even don't need to worry about having a long enough waiting line, they just don't exist anymore.

To put it more succinctly, they simplified the game as they do with many pc games when they turn them into a mobile game. But this, however, doesn't mean it isn't fun anymore. You just need to get the hang of it at the start, value it as a game on its own, and put a decent park together. And how this is done is quite simple, but took me some time to figure out.

As with many games you don't get everything at the same time. To get the better rides you need to collect cards, and these will only be available when you achieve goals. These goals can be achieved (as in many mobile games) by waiting a few hours, watch a commercial or, of course, pay for them. Now, I still refuse to pay for anything in an app game, so I opted for the first two choices. They may take longer in the beginning but they do the job nicely once you get started. The only problem is (just like with collecting any type of cards) you don't always get the ones you want or need and end up with many, many duplicates. Thank god you can use these duplicates to upgrade your rides, making them more fun and bringing in more money. Just one tip, don't upgrade too much in the beginning of the game; you'll need the money for other things. I made that mistake because I didn't quite get the game at first.

So yeah, you just build your park, make sure you get cool rides, extend your park, make sure more people come etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. And while Rollercoaster Tycoon for mobile devices may not be the most exciting game out there, but it sure is fun. The fact that this review is a bit late is a testament to that; I just kept playing and forgot to start writing about it. I personally think that this is what the game does best; once you get into the swing of things you just can't stop!
