SPELLSWORN

By Michael "Magic Mike" Dumee on March 13, 2018

A game that you can buy in early access, but will be free-to-play after launch? Pretty unique concept, right? It's how the game Spellsworn, developed by Malmö, Sweden based Frogsong Studios, is introduced to the world of games. But who is brave enough to enter the dangerous arenas of Spellsworn?

Of course it's me: Magic Mike! But every mighty hero has a cool sidekick. That's why I joined forces with my sister Diana "DumeeGamer" Dumee (and also because it's hard to pick someone else, if your sister is jumping up and down frantically in the front row, with puppy eyes and everything!). So let's enter the raging battles that make up Spellsworn!

The game starts without a tutorial, but for seasoned moba gamers this shouldn't be a problem. The controls and game play is similar to other moba games. Diana and I had agreed to start our game at 13.00. But at least 30 minutes before that, my noob sister was stalking me on Whatsapp and Discord, because she desperately needed the expert advice and guidance of her brother. Okay, to be honest she figured out most of the controls out herself, but she didn't know how to move her character (which is done, naturally, by clicking the right mouse button).

So, off we go! Before you start the actual game, there is some time to buy, sell and upgrade your spells. You can choose spells of five different categories: Offensive, Defensive, Area, Utility and Travel. And it's up to you to make the most out of your money and spells in order to win. You can buy up to eight spells, which will be assigned to the keys q, w, e, r, a, s, d and f. If you're happy with a spell, it's wise to upgrade it. If, on the other hand, you're not happy with a spell, you can always decide to sell it, so you have room for another one.

Spellsworn is all about strategy. With a big and varied arsenal of spells to choose from, you'll need to find the best strategy to defeat your enemies. Apart from the spells that your opponents will hurl at you, there is something else that will present a very real danger: the environment. Keep an eye on the arena while battling, because the field can shrink! It can be dangerous for you, but keep in mind that it's also dangerous for the other players. Maybe you can use it to your advantage?

Spellsworn only offers you a PvP game, so there is no team to watch your back. This is a matter of personal preferences. Are you a team player or do you like to play alone against others? Your victories will be truly yours, but if you lose you'll have only yourself to blame. Personally, I like both. I like to play in a team in games like League of Legends, but from time to time it's nice to have a PvP game in which you can do all the decision-making by yourself. I like that it offers only spells to attack and defend yourself with (at this moment), which encourages you to try different tactics, instead of having the option of close combat and other non-magical weapons.

Prior to launch, Spellsworn will cost you about ten bucks, but from the moment of the game's release on March 13, it will be free-to-play. There will be the option to purchase in-game cosmetic items, but they'll have no impact on game play. Anyone who owns the game before launch will be rewarded with a couple of unique items that will not be available to players who get the game after launch; The Archon Skin and the Hourglass Staff! If you own the game at launch, you'll be rewarded with the Founder's Edition (content will be announced at launch).

Spellsworn is a great addition to an ever-growing genre. It doesn't bring a big box of new features to the stage, but it does exactly what you want from a PvP MOBA. So maybe, just maybe, our paths will cross in one of its many arenas. And if that happens, make sure to watch your back, or else I'll put a spell on you!
