As my true fans would know *cough*, I am absolutely hyped about the fact that the new WWE game came out. As the true die hard WWE fan that I am, I just had to buy the special NXT Edition. Although I'm not going to go into too much detail about that, let me just to sum it up quickly; it contains the game itself, Goldberg and NXT expansion DLC, a Topps card with a piece of the actual NXT Takeover London ringmat, a signed piece of artwork of Shinsuke Nakamura and a Finn Balor figurine! So am I excited to own this special edition? You bet your flying clothesline I am!

Welcome to Suplex City!

IT'S WWE 2K17 TIME EVERYONE! AND I COULDN'T BE MORE EXCITED!

But enough about that, let's get into the game! WWE 2K17 is always a big release for me and it just has to deliver! So naturally, my expectations weren't easy to fulfill. Luckily, 2K (who is well underway to becoming my favorite game developer), did what they do best: deliver.

Firstly, let's go through the most important gameplay changes. First of all: submissions. The submission system has been a highly debated topic over the last years. In 2K16, the game switched from button mashing to the rotation system (which I personally thought was for the best), this was quite a big change though. This year you get to choose which kind of minigame you want to play during a submission move, so everybody can be happy! But perhaps the most notable change in gameplay, is in multi-man matches. My god, these used to be absolute chaos. Luckily, in 2K17 there's a new feature during these matches. When there are multiple wrestlers in the ring and one of them takes a big hit, he (or she) rolls out of the ring, just like in real matches! When you look at a Fatal 4-way in the actual WWE for example, you'll notice that during the match, for the majority of time not all wrestlers will be in the ring. Thanks to this big change in the gameplay, multi-man matches feel way less chaotic, more authentic and quite simply more fun!

Now that we've got through the big gameplay changes, let's see what modes are in the game. And basically, it's pretty much the same as last year; quick match, career mode, universe mode, online and the creation suite... But wait, WHERE'S THE SHOWCASE MODE!? 2K wanted to create a showcase mode starring the cover athlete Brock Lesnar, but unfortunately, due to a lot of wrestlers he faced in his career not working for WWE anymore, they couldn't manage to make it feel as authentic as it needed to be. This I can respect from 2K, some of his best matches have come against people like Kurt Angle and CM Punk, who don't work for the company anymore, and it wouldn't make sense to create a showcase of Brock's career without those guys in it.

So, what did WWE 2K17 compensate with? First of all, a bigger roster than ever before (over 130 playable characters!!!) and second of all, backstage brawling and fighting in the crowd! Especially the latter of the two is something the fans have wanted for a long time now. It's absolutely epic to be able to jump the barricade and just get to fight in between the crowd or go backstage and brawl in the locker room area! You can smash your opponent's head into a TV screen, you can put him through tables backstage, you can even take it into the Authority's office where you might actually come across Triple H of Vince McMahon! This addition to the game really adds a whole lot of fun to it and also appeals to casual fans who just like to use all kinds of weapons during a match rather than just wrestling moves.

Universe mode this year feels a lot like actually watching an episode of Raw or Smackdown, when the show starts in the game, you get an intro video and fireworks in the arena, just like in real life! You can also cut promos now, which allow you to further establish a wrestler's character, create or disband tag teams in a more realistic way or call out your rival! (This feature has also been added to career mode) This year the game has also kept the brand split in mind, thanks to that, you can now have more than just one pay-per-view (aka special show) a month! So for example: in the second week of September you can have Backlash for Smackdown, Clash of Champions for Raw and maybe even NXT Takeover Brooklyn for NXT! The customisation possibilities are limitless!

Career mode has undergone some changes as well, first of all, if you perform well enough in your try-out matches, you might get send straight to the main roster and be able to skip NXT completely! This makes a lot of sense if you have played career mode in the last two years because it'll make you feel like a bigger superstar! And if you would like to go to NXT but you have to go straight to the main roster, you can choose to go back to NXT after winning your first main roster championship! Career mode also focusses on the advocate of the beast incarnate Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman, as he is looking to perhaps make you the next "Paul Heyman guy". You can choose to either join him, or decline his offer. Depending on what choice you make your career might develop in different ways.

So, I think that just about covers all the important things in this amazing game. If you get any chance to pick it up, do it. It's my personal game of the year and it's a lot of fun to play, even if you're not a wrestling fan! Don't agree with me? Come at me and I'll bite your freaking nose off! (shoutout to King Ross). But in all seriousness, WWE 2K17 is absolutely awesome and will guarantee you a load of fun for a long time!

Oh and while you're still here, my colleague CallMeBackdraft will be making a video review on Youtube, it isn't out yet, but as soon as it is, this page will be updated with a link to the video!
