AN INTERVIEW WITH PHIL RING, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AT TT GAMES, ABOUT LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES 2

By Diana "DumeeGamer" Dumee and Phil Ring on June 6, 2017

During my visit of the Warner Bros press presentation on May 29, Phil couldn't make it because of technical difficulties at the British Airway airport. But we still got a chance to play the game and Phil was kind enough to answer our questions afterwards.

Playing LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 was a bit of a challenge, because in this demo there was no introduction and no tutorial. After some trial and error, I managed to make my way out of the airship and enter a impressive fight with a big giant enemy. I saw some familiar faces like Rocket and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, so I immediately started switching characters until I was Rocket, my personal favorite! This game has the LEGO look and feel, just like we like it to be. And the Marvel characters are, as always, awesome and over the top. Yes, I can feel it; I've been LEGO-Marvelised and it is awesome!

But hey, don't take my word for it. Let's ask the maker, the master-mind, the man-with-the-plan, Phil Ring, about this game and let him convince you:

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions about LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. I saw the announcement trailer and played the game during the hands-on session last week. I'm already convinced that everyone should play this game, but what do you think is the main reason, people are going to like this game?

We wanted to create something that if you're a fan of LEGO, you're going to have a good time with this game. If you're a fan of Marvel, you're going to have a good time with it. And even if you don't like LEGO or Marvel, you still can have a good time with this game! That's really important to us. We wanted to create something that is really accessible and really exciting at the same time. So if you're a massive Marvel fan and you know everything about these characters, you'll know what we're doing in here, with all the characters switching in and out. Or if you have LEGO play sets at home and recognize the LEGO look and feel in the game, you'll also know it's all about having fun!

How is this sequel different, compared to the first game?

We knew we wanted to do a sequel, so we carry on the story of the first one, but we also knew we wanted to do a different story. So we created or big open world called Kronopolis, which is vastly different from anything you've played in the first game and a much bigger experience for the players, including side quests and missions. A really cool feature is time travel and time manipulation, so you'll be able to move objects through time. For example, if you came across a collapsed archway and you have an character with the ability to rewind time, you could restore the archway to what it originally looked like. Or maybe you want to push an object through time into the future and then use it in a different way. We also introduced new characters with new abilities. There will also be characters you'll know from LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 1 but they'll have some new tricks up their sleeves. So yeah, there will be something fresh for everyone.

Are you a LEGO/Marvel fan yourself?

I am indeed! I had the luxury of being able to work on both LEGO Marvel Super heroes and LEGO Marvel Avengers and I'm a big fan of LEGO and Marvel. So to work on something with characters I grew up with and absolutely love is fantastic, it's great!

Is it difficult to create a game based on toys and themes many people know by heart?

For us it's actually great, because we're all fans of these items at the office, so it's really a passion that we make these games. We know and we want to deliver a high quality product, because we're huge fans of Spiderman, Hulk, Black Panther, Thor and Dr. Strange and so we want to make sure we create something that does these characters justice and that we can be really proud of. We want to create a real good representation of the character, but at the same time done differently because this is a LEGO version of these characters. So we have to do something with them that people actually haven't seen before. So if you're a big fan of any of the characters, getting to see a LEGO version of him/her is actually a new version, a different version. So yeah, it's great for us.

If one has never played a LEGO/Marvel game before (shame on them) can they still easily jump in and enjoy LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2?

Very much. We say that the story follows the one from LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, but if you haven't played it, it doesn't matter. It really is a great entry point into the series. We will teach people about the mechanics and from the story point of view, it's very easy to pick up. We start the level with the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy on the planet Xandar, but we very quickly explain what's going on, we explain who the bad guys and the good guys are and what's happening. So, this really is a game that when you never played it before, this can be a good entry point for you to try the series out.

One last special question we ask all people we interview: What are your thoughts on Garden Gnomes?

I am a big fan of garden gnomes! I actually bought my father one for Father's day where he looks like a zombie, so a zombie gnome. Unfortunately there was a disaster; the cable for the lawn mower knocked him over and he got broken. So we now have broken zombie gnome. But I like garden gnomes, more garden gnomes in the world, please! (we have to add here that, due to his beard, if Phil was to put on a pointy woolly hat, he would actually look a bit like a garden gnome. It's true, he even acknowledges this himself!)

We would like to thank Phil very much for taking the time to answer these questions! Now the only thing left to do is... wait until November 14 of this year, when LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is released, and everyone with a PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch (the game will release later for the Nintendo Switch) can join this MARVELous party!
