REVENGE OF THE DICTATORS - BLACK BOX ADVENTURES

By Diana "DumeeGamer" Dumee & Bart Latten (Black Box Adventures)

Last month, we had the opportunity to play a shiny new board game, still in its beta phase. The developers, Black Box Adventures, visited us in the luxury of our own home for a round of their upcoming game of world domination: Revenge of the Dictators. You can read all about this friendly round of backstabbing by clicking here. This month, their game will finally go live on Kickstarter, so itís about time we had a talk with Bart Latten of Black Box Adventures about the progress, the reactions and, of course, the game itself.

Letís start at the beginning. Why develop your own board game?

Once upon a time, like 5 years ago, ďRevenge of the Dictators" was born on a very rainy and boring afternoon. Bas and his friend Mo were done playing some other games and had the feeling they were missing something. Perhaps it was their lack of emotional intelligence, or their years of natural selection forced cut throating nature, which made them look for something moreÖevil. I mean, who doesnít like to backstab their best friends? And whoís better at that than Dictators?

How did you come up with the idea for Revenge of the Dictators?

Thatís all just pure logical thinking combined with tons of very important unpublished research by Pinky and the Brain. I mean, what are Dictators doing every day? Trying to take over the world! And what better place to start than the U.S. where, for some unknown reason, all natural disasters and alien invasions seem to happen? But what could be an occasion for a bunch of Dictators to be at the same spot at the same time? A holiday in Hawaii!

How many people were needed to create this board game?

Over 9000!! No, but seriously, it started out with 2 people, 5 years ago. After some time in the freezer, the project was reanimated by Bas, Bart and Alina (Black Box Adventures). For a year now, we have been tweaking, finalizing, tweaking some more, finalizing it again and, in the end, playtesting it a lot. In total we have had over 300 play-testers! But at the moment we need a lot more people to actually make it happen, because we are trying to fund the project through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. From the very start, it was our intention to not go to a publisher, as we would like to create this game ourselves. The future of Black Box Adventures is depending on Revenge of the Dictators, and we would love to show you some more of our game ideas!

After playing Revenge of the Dictators, I realized that it canít really be compared to any other board game. Was this your goal or did it just happen?

Although we changed some mechanics, cards and concepts in the final game, the gameplay is very similar to the original idea. When Bas and Mo made the initial steps they didnít have another specific game as an example in mind. Mo was a casual gamer and didnít have a lot of experience with different games. Bas had played a lot of games and was an enthusiastic Magic the Gathering player. I think this combination ensured that the game entertains a lot of different gamers. This makes Revenge of the Dictators the perfect gateway-game.

During our play through, we could wear some of the fancy hats you brought along. Are these hats going to be in the standard edition of the game or maybe a collectorís item?

We encourage everyone to put on a fake mustache, dictator hat, coat, military clothing and the like when they play our game. We think the theme is very important for the game: who doesnít want to be a Dictator? Of course, we canít forget all the bad things they have done. Weíre trying to approach this theme with care and fun. Maybe some people will get a wrong idea about us if we try to distribute Dictator-ish item, but haters will be haters. The one and only Big Red Button we bring along during every playtest will be for sale!

After our play session, you had more opportunities to let the public try out your game Revenge of the Dictators. How where the reactions?

People are very enthusiastic about it, once they understand the game is about backstabbing each other, sometimes to the point you just want to lay down in a corner, crying, with a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows and cinnamon. So yeah, good stuff. What makes this game stand out to other games is that you can also play it with your non-die-hard-gamer friends. The rules are easy to learn, but because of the 122 unique cards every game is different and there are tons of card combinations and strategies.

What is your ultimate dream regarding Revenge of the Dictators?

World Domination! As this quote might be subject to various interpretations we would like to clarify it just a little more. We would love to fund Revenge of the Dictators with Kickstarter, including all the awesome stretch goals. This includes really real fake Dictator Passports, custom dice, upgraded components, extra founding fathers and Dictators, Meeple stickers, a lot more cool stuff and some ďnew" Dictators inspired by the likeness of backers. Additionally, this would give us the opportunity to build a community with which to share new ideas, as we have some more cool projects in store for the world.

Can we expect more board games by Black Box Adventures?

Most definitely!

And, as a final question; is there anything we havenít discussed, but you really think people should know?

The first expansion of the game will already be available with our Kickstarter. If youíre not as passionate about all the Dictator stuff as we are, we are giving you the opportunity to play an American Special Agent named ďBob". Bob has some nice special abilities, his own stack of powerful cards and is really good looking! Furthermore, we have a nice Kickstarter-exclusive promo depicting someone who looks a lot like our all-time favorite American hero: Chuck Norris. Pure awesomeness!
