SPIEL 2018: BLACK BOX ADVENTURES

« Back to Spiel 2018 report

By Raymond "DuMeeple" Dumee on November 1, 2018

The guys and girl from Black Box Adventures did what they promised they would do and brought two beautiful prototypes of their upcoming games with them to Spiel. That way they could show us what they have in store for 2019. Besides all the Itchy Monkey business, this is what I really was looking forward to and I must say that I really like the results.

For one of these games, Climate Oasis, they decided about a month ago that they were going to redo the whole shebang. While, at first, this game was a card placing game, it now became a tile placing game with some cards and with exceptionally big tiles (and you know what they say about men with big tiles, don't you. No? Well, me neither actually, come to think about it. Oh well!) I just really hope the size of the tiles stays like they are at Spiel because they are positively huge and completely covered with beautiful artwork. I didn't have the chance to talk too much about the game with Bas or Bart, seeing as how they were very busy during the time I was drooling over the Climate Oasis game board. But, in best DumeeGamer fashion, we will certainly come back to this game in due time, so stay tuned for more...

The other game that Black Box adventures has planned for a 2019 release, is one I had the fortune to be able to try before at the Spellenfestival in Genk: Adventures in Neverland. Back then, I played a print-version of the game, seeing as how none of the actual game pieces were ready yet. Luckily, for Spiel they really came through and brought a nice cardboard board and player boards and, lest we forget to mention this, the beautiful token bags and wooden figures. I thought everything already looked awesome and the game is still only a prototype! So, as you can imagine, I'm truly stoked for this game and will keep a close watch on its progress.

Black Box Adventures is best known for their games: Revenge of the Dictators and Frutti di Mare. The game they released for Spiel this year was Called Itchy Monkey. Just click on one of the previous links to read a review about these cool games! Furthermore, we can expect Kickstarter previews of both Climate Oasis and Adventures in Neverland when they go live, so keep an eye on the All Aboard category!
