This is my absolute favorite time of year. I love Christmas decorations, curling up on my couch with a blanket and tea or hot cacao and, of course, playing a good video game! With the holidays rapidly approaching, I would like to tell you about a game I played this year. It was a thrilling tale of danger, cuteness and a furry hero! One could say it is purrrrfect for the holidays...
Okay, all jokes aside, I'm talking about Cat Quest; a action adventure RPG, developed and published by Gentlebros. This game truly was the single most surprising game I've played this year! I found it when I was strolling through the PlayStation Store and after playing the demo, I was thoroughly convinced; I really needed to play the full game! For only ?12,99 (or the equivalent of your country) this game is added to your Steam or console game library, or to your iOS or Android device for only ?4,99. I must say it was money well spent! I had so much fun with it, that even my husband Ferry "Sadhonker" Adams, who usually tends to stay as far away as humanly possible from everything cute and cuddly, gave the game a try and loved every second of it!
So, what is Cat Quest exactly? Well, Cat Quest is an open world RPG and its story revolves around a cat who was sailing with his sister one day when, out of the blue, his sister got kidnapped! The little cat is shipwrecked after that and he wakes up on the shores of the kingdom of Felingard. In order to find his sister he has to complete all kinds of quest, because the land of Felingard has a few of troubles of its own. Usually, kingdom troubles are mostly about taxes, obtuse farmers and headstrong princesses, but not Felingard; its lands are overrun by Dragons that are destroying everything in their path. Soon after you wake up, you'll meet your companion for this adventure, Spiri, who discovers a strange birthmark on the back of your head. According to Spiri, you just might be the last living Dragonblood, a legendary warrior who actually can save this kingdom!
Now, the best thing of this whole game for me was dressing up my brave cat. Our hero can wear a hat, a suit of armor and a weapon , each of which can be swapped out while you make your way through this adventure of epic proportions! The developers came up with lots of cool items for you to wear and wield. At the start of the game you will mostly find very standard stuff, but along the way you'll find more of the same item, which will upgrade it and make it more powerful. And, of course, you will also come across new and better items for each of the three categories. So this gives you two ways in which you can make sure your furry friend becomes more and more powerful as you progress through the game.
Another thing to keep an eye out for are caves. Some of them will be owned by mages, which gives you the possibility to unlock and upgrade your cat's magical powers. A cat with magical powers, you say?! Yes, dear readers; our little hero does indeed wield a collection of magical powers, which is facilitated by the Dragonborn part of his ancestry. And boy oh boy, you will most definitely need those powers because, apart from the dragons, Felingard is also crawling with other monsters and nefarious bad guys. The kingdom is a very dangerous place, especially for a tiny cat! There are many enemies on the prowl and danger might be lurking in and around every corner.
With Cat Quest being a game of the RPG variety, the lands of Felingard hold a great many quests for you to complete. With every quest you complete, you get drawn deeper and deeper into the story and slowly start to unravel the mystery of your sister's kidnapping. Now, each quest yields its own set of rewards, which you can then use to make your furry friend even more powerful, but beware; as you get further into the game and discover new areas, the enemies you'll encounter will also grow stronger and stronger, so be sure to have the best gear possible and your spells upgraded as well and at the ready!
What I adore about Cat Quest (apart from all the cute kittens running around on the screen, of course) is that it offers gamers enough possibilities to play the game as they would like. You can tailor your character to your own preferred playing style, without getting lost in a plethora of unnecessary options. I played the Playstation version of the game, in which you can map four spells to the two shoulder buttons and two triggers on your controller. You can select your favorites from nine different spells in total. And while selecting your hat, armor and weapon, you can vary in the styles. This basically comes down to choosing either melee or magic, but you can fine-tune these specs with by combining items and weapons.
During the game you will travel across the map and enter dungeons to hopefully find items you need to upgrade the most brave cat this, or any, world has ever seen. I love how the dungeons are different from one another and how you'll need to be creative with your attacks to overcome different enemies. There is stamina and health to consider when entering a dungeon or battling the next enemy, so keep an eye on both. Between your travels you can always visit towns and cities, where you can take a short catnap to replenish your health and save your game.
The various regions of Felingard and their inhabitants look absolutely stunning. The comic style chosen for the game perfectly complements the story and setting and looks nothing less than gorgeous! The soundtrack of the game is lighthearted at times, while truly heroic at others, serves to even further enhance the experience, making Cat Quest nothing short of an adventure of a lifetime! The cute-looking feline citizens of Felingard have some dark secrets of their own and you'll end up in various situations, some dangerous, some really funny, but all thoroughly interesting and really, really fun!
I truly had a blast playing Cat Quest! You could say I was as happy as a cat in a cardboard box and tuna processing factory. If you haven't had the chance to play this game yet, please make sure you do so in the near future. I can promise you that you won't regret it! This game is so awesome, or, as they say in Felingard: pawsome. And the fun doesn't stop there, because the release of a second Cat Quest game is scheduled for 2019! So, if you're looking for a fun game to play during the holidays, or for those cozy couch moments this winter, Cat Quest is definitely more than an excellent option!
