At last yearís Spellen Spektakel (Board Game Fair) in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, we visited the White Goblin Games booth and played the game Gubs. Itís about time we told you a bit more about this great game, featuring cute, little characters called Gubs.
We had so much fun playing this game with only the two of us! In the time since then, we have also played this game together with other members of our family. I personally like board games that are both fun to play with just two players, as well as with more than two players. And Gubs is a good example of just such a game!
So, what exactly are Gubs? Well, Gubs are strange little, bug-like creatures. They have the greatest adventures while you try to build a strong Gub colony, untouchable to the other players. This is a must, because they will also want to have as much Gubs in their colonies as possible. The main goal is to have the most Gubs at the end of the game. You have to collect them, steal them from other players or destroy the Gubs of other players (which, truth be told, always makes Diana a bit sad).
Every turn has three phases; first you draw a card, then you play as many cards as you want. At the end of your turn you canít have more than eight cards in your hand, so if you have more, youíll have to discard one or more cards until you end up with eight cards.
The second phase of a turn is where it all happens. You can play a Gub card, from that moment on this Gub will count as a member of your colony. To protect your Gubs you can play a Barricade card. You can also play a Trap Card on other playerís Gubs. Once a Gub is trapped, it doesnít count as a member of the colony. A Tool card can help your colony and a naturally a Danger card brings danger, which you can use to steal or attack a free Gub from your opponents.
With such a diversity of cards itís hard to predict who is going to be the winner of the game. Because some cards can turn odds in a blink of an eye. You'll have think ahead and plan your strategy, while always being prepared to alter that strategy as necessary. Don't just throw cards away, because it may be wise to hang on to it and use it later. But thereís a catch! Endlessly saving a card for later use is not always a wise decision, because you never know when the game will end.
The game's card deck contains three Letter cards, which together they spell the word GUB. As soon as all three Letter card are placed on the table, the game is over. Because these letter cards are shuffled through the card draw pile at the beginning of each game, and because they have to be played immediately when they're drawn, it adds an element of uncertainty to the game. You can think ahead and plan a whole strategy, but the game can be over before you know it. So it does eventually pay off to take a risk from time to time.
Gubs is a great game with nice and cute looking cards. Itís fun to play with two players as well as with a larger number. Up to 6 players can compete at the same time. It can take a little bit of practice to get the hang of it, but everyone can learn this game. Itís simple enough for a eight year olds while still be challenging and fun enough for grown-ups. And if you canít get enough of the card game, you can also play this game on your iOS device.
