Back in 2016, we visited the awesome people of Frozenbyte at Gamescom and tried out their, then still upcoming, game: Nine Parchments. Ever since, I so badly wanted to play this game, and this week its finally Nine Parchments time!
Nine Parchments is a cooperative, magical blast'em up game. You can play it together with up to four players online and in couch coop. And to be honest, you can also have a lot of fun playing this game by yourself, because it's just an awesome game. But the big fun starts when playing together with your friends, because Nine Parchments is kind of designed to play with others!
So whether you're going play it by yourself or with others, you're playing the same story. A very smart and old wizard is training his young protégés. As you may expect from the youthful, they are wild and, although they are willing to learn, not yet ready to become entitled a true wizard. Alas, because of a strange event, nine of the High Wizard's magical parchments get lost and are spread out over the lands. And, of course, it's up to you to collect them all and bring them back, using only your wits and a few well aimed spells!
Working together is the key here. Sometimes it is best to take out one big enemy together, before finishing off the little ones apart from each other. At other time it might work just fine, taking out the creatures on your own. You then just blast your way through the pack of monsters until you meet the other players of your party. If one player dies during these battles, don't worry about it too much; they will respawn over time, albeit fairly slowly. You can speed up this process by standing next to your fallen comrade. This does, however, make you the perfect target for the bad guys. If all the players died, one of them get randomly resurrected; this is your last chance to win the fight and save the party! So be smart, be quick or be dead! If you fail to defeat the remaining enemies after your Last Chance, you will have to reload your last checkpoint.
Of course I played this game with my husband Ferry "Sadhonker" Adams and we had so much fun! I must say, Nine Parchments can be quite challenging, especially because not only your attacks, but also your enemies belong to one of the six elemental and magical groups: Fire, Ice, Steam, Lightning, Life and finally, Death. As you might suspect, attacking a creature of the Ice group with your own Ice-based attack doesn't do a whole lot. The groups are coupled in pairs, so you know which attack does the most damage to which group of enemies. Fire does more damage to ice and vice versa, as do Steam and Lightning, Life and Death. So, be sure to always make sure you have the appropriate attack for each enemy.
Before you start the game, you can choose your wizard protégé, basically male or female. In the menu you can see that it will be possible to choose hat and a staff as well. I say, will be, because when you start there are not staffs and hats available yet. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you have some unlocking to do!
While playing the game you will travel through several lands and sometimes you will discover some of those items. The first "staff" item I found was a broom. You can use it to perform a melee attack on enemies. And okay, it does more damage than fighting them with your bare hands. But boy, I was happy I found my first real staff. Besides a melee attack you also have the aforementioned spells. Both characters start with three spells each and while you progress the game more spells will be added. You can select the spell you want to use very easy via the spell wheel.
The whole game looks so nice, colorful and the soundtrack is great. I'm not sure if I'm right about this, but at some point there was a bit of music which reminded me of the music of The Lord of the Rings. And after playing Nine Parchments, Iron Maiden's song Alexander the Great was stuck in my head. Coincidence? Either way, the music is beautiful and catchy! Together with cool characters and great enemies, I say this game is really, really awesome!
Nine Parchments is an awesome game. There are dozens of spells for you to discover, level up and improve your character through their skill trees, but beware of friendly fire! So if you're up for a challenging but above all fun game, to play yourself or even better, with your friends, I would definitely recommended a round of Nine Parchments. Or even better, many rounds of Nine Parchments!
