This is Spartaaa!!! Sometimes you hear about a title and you immediately know that you just need to play it, or else you can't continue living. Okay well, maybe not that dramatic, but you get my point, right? When I heard about Story of a Gladiator, I knew I had to play this game. Why? Well, first of all, the Spartacus TV series is one of my favorite series ever. Secondly, I love the movie Gladiator. And third, I never played a gladiator game before, so let's get this story started!

Time for a bit of background story. You are the only survivor of a violent attack on your town. Your friends and family have been slaughtered, but for some reason you were able to flee and survive. You are not sure why the Gods have spared you, but in the end you decide that their gift will not be in vain. You see a Gladiator in action for the very first time in your life and decide that you also want to be one. And not just a gladiator, no sir, you want to be the Champion! And how does one become a champion, I hear you ask? Well, my friends, the answer is simple; kill a lot of people and never die! Armed with this, albeit basic, knowledge you start your adventure as a volunteer gladiator with hopes of one day becoming a champion!

Story of a Gladiator is a beat 'm up game that offers you three difficulty levels to play on; the easiest one is "Scared", which grants you double health points, as well as 50% additional damage. The second one is "Gladiator" and, as the name might hint at, is the recommended setting. Last but not least, for the bravest among us we have the "Lion" difficulty, which offers you limited lives and no replays. So, after choosing our difficulty, it's time for another choice; where do you hail from? Your origin decides which bonus you are blessed with. You can be a Greek, which grants you 8% bonus damage. Or you can enter the arena as a warrior from Carthage and receive 5% extra bonus health. Or do you fancy to walk like an Egyptian? No problem; Being from Egypt gives you an additional skill point.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you have all been waiting for; it's time for us to enter the arena! When battling in the arena, you will fight waves of enemies. During your first fight, you'll just have one basic attack and I am totally owning it, because I won! Victory is mine! To be honest, I was a bit worried at first, because the control lay-out seemed a bit strange to me. Luckily, the developers must have thought that people also like to arrange their own controls, so they can play better and become the fastest, the toughest and the... ehm... bestest gladiator of the world. And I, for one, thank them for doing so!

After my first awesome victory, I traveled back to the city of Rome. Rome is your base; here you can buy several things at stores, but first you'll need to unlock them by winning matches. The first store that you unlock is combat training, which is basically your skill tree. Later on you will unlock the blacksmith where you can upgrade your weapons and armor. Armor increases your health, weapons increase your damage and shields slightly increase your health and the amount of damage you can block. In the amulet shop you can buy amulets to gain passive skills and traits. The temple is the place to make offers to please the gods and gain their favor. At the library you can check your stats and the butcher provides you with a variety of delicious foods. The products you can buy here give you a certain temporary bonus which will last till the end of your next battle.

The battles in the arena are the main event of the game and every time I entered it and heard the trumpets play the opening tune, I felt the excitement (probably because I know, dying in the arena does not mean my death in real life). Now, of course, winning is your main objective in the arena, but this isn't always easy. Luckily, there are ways to tip the odds in your favor. Performing a special attacks or combos will excite the crowd. When the crowd favors you, they can throw food into the arena to help you. They might even throw rocks at your opponents and stun them for a couple of seconds! Once the crowd's energy is high enough, you can call upon the Gods. The more energized the crowd is the longer the God's will help you (a regular visit to the temple also doesn't hurt either).

Ladies and gentlemen, this is an awesome game! It's easy to learn, but hard to master and victory isn't yours that easy. Prepare yourself for every upcoming battle and you'll live a hell of a lot longer! Story of a Gladiator is a well-balanced game when it comes to winning, losing and unlocking shops, skills and items. Battles in the arena become more difficult as you progress through the game and defeat is mostly a sign that it's time unlock and use something new. You can even reallocate your skill points and invest them in a different skill, if you so wish. I think it's really cool that you're allowed to do that. And if nothing else helps, just make sure you embrace death as a real gladiator and die with honor... and try again, of course!
