"When I grow up, I want to be a dinosaur!", is the absolute best answer I ever heard to the time-old question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" And although it's not, technically speaking, a dinosaur, a dragon is close enough, don't you think?

Why this strange introduction? Well, during my adventures while playing Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap, there was a point where I turned into a dragon. But let's not get to far ahead of things. Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap is a very successful remake of the 1989 game, Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap. Some of you might even have played the original game on your trusty Sega Master System. I personally haven't, so I was set for my first even Wonderboy experience. and what an experience it was!

Before I start my adventure, I have to decide if I want to be a boy or a girl. And because of the fact I've been disapproved of being a boy thirty seven years ago, I chose to be a girl. The intro of the game starts with the ominous title: "The Last Room". You're very strong and have to defeat a mechanical dragon. From the moment I read "The Last Room", I knew I was in trouble. This can only end in tears! I was able to defeat the dragon, but instead of leaving the castle in celebrating mode, I lost all my strength and was turned into a dragon. (and a very cute one, I may add) I manage to escape the castle and this intro ends with the title which, because I chose to play as a girl, is magically changed to Wondergirl: The Dragon's Trap. Nicely done!

I started the game as Wondergirl and she wielded a sword, but I'm a dragon now and that means I can breathe fire to defeat my enemies! I must say, I love the dragon breath, this way I can keep some distance between me and my opponents. Next to weapons there are some special abilities to help you, like arrows to shoot in the air or a tornado that gets rid of some enemies. You can collect these abilities while visiting a level. They might even be dropped by an enemy you've defeated, instead of the coin or heart that these wretched creatures usually leave behind after they vanish from existence. Make sure to collect as many coins as possible, because buying items, health and upgrading your defense and attack really makes a difference!

Every time when you defeat a boss, you turn into another creature/animal with their own special weapon and ability. The second time, I changed into a mouse which is not the most heroic creature. But he's tiny, so most of the time you can easily evade attacks and you can cling to walls. Even hanging from the ceiling is no problem for our tiny hero. Talk about a smart way to escape your enemies, am I right? So, who am I kidding? I love to be a mouse!

Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap is still, after all these years, a cool side scrolling platform game. With the remade graphics and sounds, the game is completely transformed into a modern looking and sounding rendition of the original 1989 game. You can change the sounds and graphics at any time to the good old retro style, which I personally think is a very nice feature! I love how all enemies perfectly fit the level they're in; For instance, you'll encounter crabs and octopi when you're running across a beach, and bats and skeletons when you're in an old castle.

I had a blast playing Wonderboy (or girl!): The Dragon's Trap! And I'm not the best gamer, when it comes to platform games. I suck at them, to be completely honest. But Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap just keeps me coming back, wanting more. If you love platform games, cute looking creatures and the option to switch between normal and retro mode, this game is definitely the one for you!
