Bouncy Bullets is a 3D platformer in which you jump across big colourful platforms in a very bright and just as colourful world published. The game is developed by Petite Games and published by Ratalaika Games. It was first released on July 9th 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Vita, followed by the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions. Now, I hadn't heard of this game yet, but was very excited to try it out since I love the games published by Ratalaika so far!
The goal of this game is to reach the end portal, through which you'll have to jump to exit / complete the level, as soon as possible. When you manage to do so, you'll get a 1 to 3 star rating depending on your time. There are 42 levels per chapter and the game has 3 chapters in total. And of course, as the title of the game suggests, there is also the bullets part! During the jumping and bouncing through the levels, you will also come across many different enemies. Some of them start shooting at you, so you will have to shoot them back!
To do so you have to use your trusty gun, which shoots either yellow or pink bullets (which come in the shape of tiny squares). Sometimes you will come across enemies with different colours (either yellow or pink), which you will have to shoot with the right kind of bullets, according to its colour. Now, this might seem pretty straightforward, but is actually quite challenging, because sometimes, some of the enemies will change colour! Plus, whenever you fall off the little islands, or get hit by an enemy, you'll have to retry the level from the beginning.
There are different kind of enemies, but beware: some enemies are special, like for instance the grey cubes. Your first instinct in this game is to shoot everything that moves, but when you actually shoot one of the grey cubes, the level will end immediately and you will have to restart from the beginning! And the enemies are not the only things you'll have to watch out for. At a certain point, the plateaus you have to make your way across will also get more dangerous to hop onto. Next to the ever-present passive obstacles, some of them will have iron spikes and even laser beams!
Now for the controls; the jumping was more difficult to get used to than I imagined at first. As for the shooting, the position of the camera dictates what you shoot at, but also what way you walk or jump. It was a bit tricky to jump onto a platform, trying not to fall down, while avoiding lasers and shooting enemies in the right colour. all at the same time! Nonetheless, I persevered and in the end I did get the hang of it, so it seems that practice really does make perfect!
The soundtracks really suits the game, but when you're stuck in a level and have to retry it many, very many, a lot of multiple plethora's of many times... the melody tends to get a tad bit repetitive. The bright colours and ice creams floating in the pink soda sea all fit very well in this very colourful and bouncy game! All in all, this was a very fun game to try! After some fiddling with the controls and getting the hang of it, it was a lovely puzzle platformer. I would suggest you try this game if you liked other games by Ratalaika Games, such as Tetra's Escape and Attack of the Toy Tanks! These are also brightly coloured and truly fun game, one of which brings the idea of platforming to the table, while the other one provides us with the much needed shooting. Combine these two, and you get Bouncy Bullets!
