DAEMON X MACHINA

Daemon x Machina is the latest game from the Japanese game studio Marvelous! And has been released for the Nintendo Switch on September 13. It is a third person, action-packed mecha shooter, filled with guns and big, big robots. Although I never really got too much into the whole mecha game genre, I must admit that this game looks really badass and I can't wait to start playing!
When I started playing the game, I was immediately pleasantly surprised. You get to fully customize your own character! And there are so many awesome features to tweak! It all has a very anime-like feeling (I love it!) and there are so many options to choose from. With many different hairstyles, eyebrow-shapes, face-shapes, you can go absolutely wild! You can even change their voice, so you can fully change your character into an awesome new recruit of your liking. So, after spending almost an hour on my appearance (I know, I get carried away with character creations), you get introduced to your brand spanking new suit.
You start as the newbie in a team that fights enemy forces using Gundam-like suits. With big guns and missiles you defeat your foes and make the world a little bit safer, one mission at a time. So what caused the need for such protective measures? Well, after the moon broke into pieces and fell down to earth, AI systems all over the planet went berserk and turned on humanity because of something that changed their perception of humans... and not for the better!
Now, almost the collective AI on the planet is out to utterly destroy humanity! Now, the collapse of the moon did not only affect the Earth's AI, it also caused the appearance of a mysterious element called Femto, which can be used to enhance the abilities of people and machines it comes into contact with. Filled with new and awesome power, these people started fighting back and formed groups of mercenaries, who are ready to fight the Earth's enemies at every turn. You are one of these mercenaries and, armed with your very own customisable suit and epic weapons, you dive headfirst into battle!
In the Mission List you can select different kind of missions to take on, either free- or story missions. In these missions you have to fight corrupted AI robots. When the mission starts, you get a quick briefing. Four (your personal AI assistant, who hasn't been affected by the moon's collapse) tells you what the main focus of the assignment at hand is. When all of the enemies have been defeated the mission is over and you get your rewards. This is often some money, and sometimes new weapons and armour for your mecha suit.
Now, I can almost hear some of thinking: "Isn't it very dangerous to face off against these formidable foes all by your lonesome?". Well yes it is but, luckily, you don't go into the missions solo, since you also have some amazing team members you will get to know a lot better during the game. Having a team to back you up is a good thing because, while the smaller enemies are pretty doable by yourself, your opponents will get bigger and bigger! It is at this time that will really need all the help you can get!
The game's graphics are great and the controls are amazing! I must say that I think it plays just a little bit better with the Nintendo Switch docked, as opposed to using the console in handheld mode, simply because of the many different buttons you'll have to press. Plus, your mecha looks bigger and even more bad-ass on TV, so that's a second advantage! The game's music gets you really pumped during the fights, with some hard rock soundtracks in the background as you fly and skate around the battle area, shooting everything in sight! The controls are fluid and intuitive and, although I did need to get a used to some of the game's mechanics when I first started playing, I got the hang of it pretty fast. The environments your epic battles take place in really feel post-apocalyptic and they fit the story perfectly.
I must say that I am really digging the whole third person shooter aspect of this game. I love that you have your own customisable character and suit, and can equip it better with newly found items! The graphics are great, and it feels like you play an mecha anime. The characters you get to know are really well rounded out, complete with their own personal fun quirks and looks. I would suggest this game to everyone who has even the slightest interest in anything mecha and everyone who likes action games and think this looks cool, because you will definitely love it!
