Now, I think that most of you will agree with me if I state that Super Mario Bros has always captured the hearts and minds of Nintendo fans across the globe. One of these games was New Mario Bros U for the, as you might have guessed from the title, Wii U. For those among us who have never actually owned this platform, there is good news, because Nintendo decided to bring the game to their latest console: the Nintendo Switch!

When I was still a tiny little Dyllis, I played The SNES versions of the Mario games or, better said, tried to play them. You see, I was so earth shatteringly bad at them that my nephews actually finished most of the levels for me, with me standing next to them, jumping frantically up and down and shouting instructions in their ear. Luckily for me, the newer Mario games feature difficulty settings and even let you play together as a team! How awesome is that?!

Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe features a total of 164 colorful, happy but also truly challenging and dark levels. Now, this may sound as a lot, but keep in mind that, if you buy New Mario Bros U Deluxe, you'll also get (like it was on the Wii U) Super Luigi Bros, which is a somewhat more difficult and much faster paced game. When playing Super Luigi Bros, you'll start every level with only 100 seconds on the clock, but you can jump way higher than Mario. If these two main games are still not enough for you, you can also try your hand at one or all of the three additional game modes: Challenge Mode, Boost Rush and Coin Battle.

But, back to the main game. Just when you thought about having a nice cup of tea at Princess Peach's castle, Bowser comes in to ruin everything. again. You get knocked down and thrown out of the castle, landing far away, somewhere in the colorful but dangerous Mario Bros. Now it is up to you and your friends to save the Princess from Bowser's grasp by making your way safely back to the castle. To do so, you must trek through a number of worlds, each of them consisting of different levels you'll have to clear before you can move on to the next one. Your main job is (as it is in practically all Mario platform games ever!) to clear all the levels you come across and get to your beloved Princess Peach.

In New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, you can choose from 5 different characters to play as: Mario, Luigi, Toad, Toadette, and Nabbit. The first three of these characters have a normal playing difficulty, while Toadette is easy and Nabbit super easy. Toadette can pick up a Super Crown, which changes her into Peachette. Playing as Toadette grants you bonus time and when she's transformed into Peachette, she can boost up after jumping and float down slowly. Playing as Nabbit tones down the danger even more and makes you immune to all enemies and the damage they would normally do.

Playing with friends also gives you some form of additional safety. When you die within a level and your friend is still alive, you return to the screen, floating inside a bubble. Your friend can then bring you back by popping the bubble you're stuck in. This does still cost you a life, but you can immediately join the fun from where you left off. I do think playing with friends makes it easier in that way, but also, at the same time, makes the game somewhat more challenging, because you keep getting in each other's way! What will probably (especially when you've just started playing the game) is that you will accidentally push your friends into the lava... or off a steep cliff. You might also (purely by accident, of course) steal their items right from under their noses. But hey, it's just a friendly game and I'm sure that your friends will forgive you for these mishaps... On second thought; just be sure to play together with only the more forgiving of your friends... just in case!

Another cool feature in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, is the fact that you can make use of Baby Yoshis! These adorable creatures come in various colors, each color with their very own special ability, which can really help you get through the levels. For example: the red Baby Yoshi can inflate an make you float over most of the enemies and pitfalls. Sadly, you cannot take a baby Yoshi into a castle level. No sir, if you enter a castle, your Yoshi will patiently be waiting for you on the beautiful world map!

As far as playing the game goes, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe works like a charm! I didn't come across any issues regarding the gameplay, everything runs smoothly and the controls are very easy to get the hang off. You can jump, walk, run, and shoot depending on which item you have. The game is really colorful and bright, with cute nostalgic music and items. The first world you enter is the Acorn plains world, where everything is grassy and sunny. After this, you'll have to make your way through a desert world, a water world, an icy mountain, some dark woods and a cloud level, each with their own look and feel, but always in that distinctive Mario style!

In conclusion, I can only state that I absolutely love New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe! With the difficulty options, I can now finally play the levels myself, instead of having other people do it for me. The game is truly cute, colorful and challenging, everything I want and need in a Mario game! If you like the original Super Mario Bros., the Yoshi games or if you are just a big Mario fan in general, then this game will most definitely love this one as well!
