April 21st marked the official release of Black Forest Games' Run-and-Gun platform game: Rogue Stormers, a game we first saw a couple of years ago under a different name. The date was August 15, 2014 and the name we first saw this game under was Dieselstörmers. Alas, some people who already had too much money, too much time on their hand and a huge stick up their asses decided to make things difficult for the developers at Black Forest Games and file a lawsuit against them because, apparently, they owned the word “diesel” in relation to video games.
Now, I don't know about you, but personally, I think people like that should be put to sleep! It's exactly this kind of narrow-mindedness that makes this world go to hell in a handbag... a denim handbag! Nevertheless, the guys and girls at Black Forest Games, persistent as they are, weren't about to give up on their game, so they added a bunch of new content and retitled it: "Rogue Stormers". And this is the game we are lucky enough to be playing right now.
So, what is Rogue Stormers, exactly? Well, it's a frantic run-and-gun platform game with rogue-like elements, cool graphics, kick-ass characters and a soundtrack to match. But first and foremost, it's loads of fun! You take control of one of the characters in order to help save the town of Ravensdale from the monster scum that is roaming its streets. You can do battle in various parts of Ravendale, like Cityscape, Ancient Ruins, Cesspools, Underground Factory and the Forgotten Caves. All levels are procedurally generated, so you can replay these levels a thousand times without ever playing the same raid twice.
Rogue Stormers is a fun game to play on your own, but it's nothing short of awesome when played cooperatively with up to 4 players, online as well as offline. Players make their way through the monster-infested streets, annihilating all enemies on their path. The great thing about Rogue Stormers is, that if you die during a mission, you still get to keep all items you've collected along the way, so your character keeps getting stronger with each new run.
The level of intricacy with which Rogue Stormers is built makes it one of the best games in its genre. An ever-expanding set of enemy characters, items and upgrades keeps things interesting, while the game's core mechanics provide an extremely sturdy base for its high-speed, over the top action run-and-gun gameplay. It's never a question of what to do; it's more a question of how to stay alive long enough to get there! Rogue Stormers' levels are positively filled to the brim with all kinds of bad guys, none of which seem to be too fond of you.
In order to cleanse the streets of Ravensdale, Rogue Stormers offers five unlockable character classes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, so every type of player can enter this awesome world and start blasting his or her way towards eternal glory! As you play through a level, you pick up various items that can help you along your quest, like: health packs, passive abilities and, much, much more. Furthermore, if you accomplish your mission, you receive crafting materials and gun parts which, in turn, can be used to modify your weapon or character stats.
The art of Rogue Stormers is really beautiful, with a lot of attention to detail. The hand-painted look of Ravendale and the characters that inhabit it gives the game that fantasy look that suits its story perfectly and is just a feast for the eyes. A very cool soundtrack completes the feel of the game and, along with the art and the characters, gives it its unique atmosphere. This combination of elements, together with the well-balanced gameplay and awesome 4-player coop mode ensure this game can be enjoyed for hours on end without ever getting repetitive or even the slightest bit boring.
I absolutely adore Rogue Stormers, and would just like to thank the people at Black Forest Games for creating such an awesome game! Rogue Stormers is the perfect combination of all the elements I value in a good game: the art is beautiful, the soundtrack is awesome, the player characters are fun and each one is different and, most importantly: you can replay this game as many times as you like without ever playing the same game twice! Seriously, what's not to like?! Well sure, you could disagree with me, but that would only result in two things happening: me being slightly annoyed and you being utterly wrong! I mean, come on; Rogue Stormers is a fantastic game that deserves to be played over and over again, until your controller catches on fire and your eyes start to twitch. It's everything a game should be, and more; it's beautiful, it's loud, it's chaotic, it's pure run-and-gun awesomeness! It's... ROGUE STORMERS!
