LEISURE SUIT LARRY: WET DREAMS DRY TWICE

By Ferry "Sadhonker" Adams on May 27, 2021

After a string of games, stretching all the way back to 1987, the Leisure Suit Larry series spawned its latest installment, Wet Dreams Dry Twice in October of 2020. The game was originally available for PC and Mac OS only, but has now also been released for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. So it's finally possible for console users to witness the misadventures of probably the most maladapted dude in the entire world, Larry Laffer!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Larry is back on the hunt for that elusive interaction between people: sex. Well, actually, he is taking things a bit slower nowadays, since he's fallen head over heels in love with a woman called Faith. And wouldn't you just know it; just when Larry thinks he has everything he could desire, Faith just up and vanishes under mysterious circumstances and Larry finds himself alone in CanC˙m where, for some reason or another, he is somehow roped into marrying the chief's daughter, whom he has never seen up till now. Haunted by memories of Faith, Larry decides to set out on an adventure to find and rescue his lost love from her Larry-less world...

Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice is developed by German game studio Crazybunch and pick up Larry's tale right after the events of the previous game in the series, Wet Dreams Don't Dry. We meet up with Larry on the island CanC˙m, from where he sets out on a grand adventure to rescue the woman he loves. Just like its predecessors, Wet Dreams Dry Twice is a classic point and click game, in which the player controls the actions of Larry by clicking on the screen (quite literally, in case you're playing on the Nintendo Switch) This way, we can move Larry around, interact with various objects in the environments and talk to people, all the while trying to overcome environmental and other puzzles along the way.

With each puzzle you solve, you come one step closer to your main objective: finding Faith. But before you can get to that, you'll have to deal with a colorful host of fun characters, each with their own personalities, problems and challenges for you to overcome. By diligently talking to everyone you meet, you can piece together hints that will lead you to the solution for any of the problems at hand. This solution, of course, is never straight forward and might demand some lateral thinking on the part of the player. Some puzzles might need you to perform certain actions, while others might need you to find and combine certain items, and not always the most logical items at that. The puzzles you come across in this game are actually not all that hard in comparison with some other games in the same genre, but that isn't a bad thing. It just means you'll be enjoying a fun and decent challenge as you uncover the story of Larry and his lost love, without the whole thing getting too frustrating.

As per usual, this latest installment in the Leisure Suit Larry series features a plethora of double entendres, sexual innuendo and suggestive themes. This is also a good thing, because what would a Leisure Suit Larry game be without them, right? The series is well-known for its exploits in these fields, without ever going too far. Granted, some of Larry's comments can be predicted ahead of time, but that just adds to the old-school charm of the series as a whole. It's like watching an old action movie. You know the good guy is going to win, but you watch it anyway. Same goes for Larry. You know he's going to make lude jokes and you can sometimes even predict which joke it is going to be, but you can't help but chuckle when he actually does.

Visually, the game looks like its direct predecessor, which means it looks good. The cartoon style still suits the premise of the game and the colorful environments and characters make for a pleasing experience when viewed on both a small and a big screen. The sound design is also right on par, with fun background tunes and a completely voiced cast of characters. Now, I won't lie to you; The humor used in the game has to be your cup of tea and may, at times, come across as a bit simple or shallow. But hey, you're playing a Leisure Suit Larry game, which are known to contain mostly silly humor. And it works. It worked back in 1987 and it still does to this day. And Wet Dreams Dry Twice is nothing less than a fun adventure game that plays great and is truly amusing, and is a more than worthy successor to the Leisure Suit throne.

So yes, Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice might not be the game for everyone, but it is engaging and really fun to play. So if you like a good point 'n click adventure, and you don't mind a bit of overly obvious sexual innuendo, you will definitely want to give this game a try. A fun backstory, a host of colorful characters and a bunch of challenging puzzles to overcome are waiting for you, so put on your best leisure suit and start chasing the woman you love... in a very elaborate and roundabout way!
