RISE OF INDUSTRY

When it comes to video games, one of my favorite genres is definitely the building / simulation / tycoon genre. I have loved these games right from the first time I ever played them, which was waaaaaay back in the nineties, when I was just a little Michael. And because of this, I'm really in for a treat. Why? Well because, out of the entire DumeeGamer crew, I am the lucky one who gets to play Rise of Industry!
For me, the single best thing about tycoon games is that I have all the time in the world. I can think things over, build and rebuild, experimenting with endless possibilities, all in my own time. Now, don't get me wrong, I like action as much as the next guy or girl, but it's fun to play a game every now and then that really challenges you to think things through. This of course doesn't mean other types of games do not do this, but things usually tend to get a little more rushed and less thought out when I need to dismantle a bomb, using just one hand, with a zombie demon horde breathing down my neck. The simulation / tycoon genre gives you all the time in the world to plan, re-plan and it's not even bothered by you changing your mind every 8.4659 nanoseconds; how cool is that?
So, Rise of Industry! The goal in this game is to create a land-o-plenty in which everyone is happy. Of course, when there's no scarcity and people can get their hands on pretty much everything they desire, they're bound to be happy, right? When you start the game, you start with a map with several cities on it. Every city has a number of wishes as far as food and other items are involved. There might be a greengrocer in one of the cities, so naturally they'll need vegetables to sell. Via your menu you can check which things you'll need to grow vegetables.
Logically, the first thing you'll need is a farm with some fields on which the vegetables can grow. But you'll also need a water facility and means to get the water to your fields. Plus, when the vegetables are ready for sale, they'll need to be transported from the farm and the greengrocer's. In other words, you'll need to take care of everything from the very beginning to the end. There is no tutorial, but the game's menu and basic gameplay is very intuitive. If you just use your brain and common sense, I think you'll have no problems whatsoever to understand how to play.
So, selling and buying are the two main activities when playing Rise of Industry. But that's not all, because decision-making is also a big part of the game. When you have to decide what your next step will be, it is wise to check the current requests of the cities. Not every item will fetch top dollar, so to speak. The higher the demand, the higher the price. But, if you over-produce an item, demand goes down and so will the price. So always keep an eye on the current demand and prices and adjust your strategy on time. And there are more ways to get the best prices. While playing, PR Marketing events will be brought to your attention. During these events, you can join an auction and of course the highest bidder wins and can, for example, sell his or her goods for a better price.
When you enter the menu for the first time, you'll notice that a lot of products, buildings, etcetera will be locked. Here's where your well earned money comes in. Everything you might need to become even more successful is placed in a skill tree. So, one by one you can unlock more and more things, by following that skill tree. You will only need two things in order to do so: money and time. research time to be more specific. It's all good and well if you throw piles of money at stuff, but things will only really get better when you also invest a lot of time in research. Trust me on this, hitting the proverbial books will amount to just as much as spending money, when it comes to building your empire. So do yourself a favor and do your research!
For those among us who just can't wait to get their hands on absolutely everything the game has to offer, Rise of Industry also features a sandbox mode, in which research and monetary restrictions take a backseat to just having fun and building everything you want. What really stands out, in my personal opinion, is the design and style of the game. In a time where realism is more and more becoming the standard for this type of games, the awesome people of Dapper Penguin choose to go for a more fun and somewhat simplified look. The game looks like its situated in a kind of toy land. Look at those cute little trucks driving around and the animals move about like a child would move them. Everything looks colorful and happy and I, for one, like it very much!
It was a privilege to be able to play this game in early access and, now that it has been released in full, I can only hope that everyone out there will give Rise of Industry a try and enjoy playing it as much as I did. It is truly awesome to build an empire and also really cool when you see your strategy is working and your decisions are, quite literally, paying off. The game does all the right things for the right reasons, the main one being having good old-fashioned fun while playing an excellent video game! So, when all is said and done, I can only say that I really enjoyed to rise to the top and become the undisputed king of industry!
