During our DumeeGamer Game Afternoon last year, we had the honor of welcoming the awesome people of indie developer Roofkat. They were present to show every visitor their upcoming game Warpthough. I , Michael a.k.a Magic Mike, of course tried my luck at their booth. And I don't regret I did!
After the event, I started playing around with the demo of Warpthrough which, at the time, contained only one level, but you could play it over and over again. Now, Warpthrough has evolved into a full game with more characters, more levels and more chaos! Every one of the characters has its own special ability that can help you defeat the enemies you'll come across as you make your way through the levels. For instance, a character can have a fireball attack, a rifle, a dog or even bombs to throw around! Can you imagine now what I meant by Chaos?
Warpthrough is a fast and challenging plat former with arcade-inspired game-play, in which you have to reach a warp-hole that will appear somewhere in the level. Just walk towards it, jump into it and reach the next level. Sound simple? Well, I don't want to crush your dreams here, but Warpthrough is anything but simple.
A lot of monsters will come for you to prevent you from reaching said warp-hole, or even worse, kill you! Of course we can't have that, so it's time to hit the attack button........ehm, yeah, I don't know how to tell you this, but there is no attack button. You can however attack and defeat your enemies; just stop moving to charge your attack, and when the time is right - move to that monster to beat it up! This may sound a bit complicated, but I can assure you, you'll get used to it faster than the speed of. well, faster than warp-speed!
Everything in this game screams retro, but playing Warpthrough doesn't feel old fashioned in any way. The very simple control scheme implemented by the developers is truly ideal, because everyone can easily join the party! And then there's the soundtrack, which is awesome! The theme of the game is going to be stuck in your head for days, but never once becomes annoying, at least not for me. And if you really like to show off how good you are, yes, there are leader-boards in this game. I like to see new names added at the board every day, so I want to invite you all to join this crazy retro adventure and try to beat my score!
I still have so much fun playing this game. It is one of those titles that you can easily pick if you have just 30 minutes to kill. It's that type of game that makes you think: Just one more time. It also makes you think: "Waaaah, WTF am I doing?!", more than once. And start all over again, and again, and again. I can't wait to see everyone playing this excellent game and I hope the great people of Roofkat Games will continue making more crazy awesome games like Warpthrough!
