HAND OF FATE 2
By Rick "Herr Doktor von Brienenstein" van Brienen on November 17, 2017
A game of cards and chance meets with hack 'n slash combat and magic? This game has got "me" written all over it! I have never played the first Hand of Fate, so I was curious when I saw footage of this game. Being a virgin when it comes to the Hand of Fate series, I jumped right in and let the game take me. ON A JOURNEY!!! I let the game take me on a journey! Well, I could've formulated that better. oh well, what are you gonna do, right?
When you start the game, there is a Tarot card reader sitting in front of you explaining how it all works. At first it sounds kind of complicated but when you get the hang of it, it's actually quite easy and fun to play. You create your character with a few customization options, and then you get introduced to the board. A main goal is active per table (mission) and you see a few cards face down in a pattern to the final (boss) card of the table. You have 3 main resources: Health, Food and Gold. Health is. well, your health. Gold you use to buy things like equipment or food. Or you need gold to complete the final card. And Food is the resource you need to move from card to card on the table. For instance if you run out of food and you move to a card you will lose some health instead.
When you land on a combat or encounter card, a Four of Greed for instance. It means you are facing 4 thugs in combat. The combat is kind of arena like. Being in a circle facing your foes using Batman Arkham series or early Assassin's Creed games' fighting mechanics. Enemies glow green when you need to parry and red when you need to dodge. All in all it works really well! Every fight is good fun but still challenging! Using a one-handed sword and shield or a big two-handed battle axe. There are even some equipment cards you can fool around with, hoping they show up in your current table.
Wheel of Fortune
Back to the card table! It isn't just moving spaces and fighting! You can negotiate or haggle with a shop owner. Using dice rolls or a big "Wheel of Fortune". Those mechanics make the board aspect of the game real fun! hoping you can buy that shining blade for half the price! Or winning an arm-wrestling match throwing double-six with 2 dice. Winning gold or food. It's this part of the game that makes you want to play it more. What can I say? There's a gambler in all of us.
Being as awesome as you are, Travelling alone might get boring after a while. Luckily you can meet people and they can accompany you! A wise magic bard or a bulky warrior! Clever use of companion cards with a very well written back story and funny punch lines. These companions can help you in combat, casting spells or providing you with shields. But the companion cards help you on the table as well! Using the Magical Bard on the table allows you to retry a "Wheel of Fortune" spin. so choose your companion wisely!
Sheer and utter awesomness!
This is a one of kind game! I really enjoy playing it still. The beauty of it is, you can play it for 30 minutes and have fun or completely lose yourself in the mythical tarot world of chance, foes and riches. I recommend you play this game! It's unique play style offers fun for every kind of gamer!
I will leave you all with a heartfelt warning not to go fiddling with tarot cards or dark magic! I was playing poker with a tarot deck last night. I got a full house and four people died! *giggles frantically*
Ze Herr Doktor is leaving ze building!
