METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN
By Rick "Herr Doktor von Brienenstein" van Brienen on October 18, 2017
Wow! To find this game in the PS Plus free section! That's a steal! This is easily one of THE best games of 2015. Don't worry if you aren't a big Metal Gear fan, I wasn't at first but this game changed it all! Making this Metal Gear game a open world game and adding tons of features was an awesome move from Konami and made more people enter the world of big Mechs and unexplainable things!
Konami said this was going to be the very last Metal Gear game so it was really story heavy and boy were they right! The game starts off with you in a hospital bed all wrapped up in bandages. Awaking from a coma after 9 years right after you crash the helicopters in Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. With all sorts of shrapnel and shards stuck in your body and head and your left arm ripped off, the doctor tells you they are going to alter your appearance because there are a lot of people that want you dead. The day before the procedure all the doctors get killed right before you and the woman who killed them says "The patient saw my face" and tries to kill you. The man in the hospital bed next to you, who is wrapped in even more bandages then you are, prevents this from happening and you escape the hospital.
It all begins...
Playing as Big Boss, you are one of the most experienced stealth ops around. As you complete the tutorial you will be brought to your very own base somewhere in the middle of the ocean! It's the kind of base that makes you feel like some sort of evil overlord. Every soldier will salute you when you walk past them and your companions will eventually stay here as well. You also start your missions from here.
TONS of features!
Right before you leave your base for a mission, you can customize your equipment, choose a companion or a vehicle. The missions in Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain are really diverse and challenging. And, best of all, you can approach them how you see fit. Go in guns blazing or stand on a hill and scout the area looking for guard patterns waiting for most of them to go to bed. Or call in air support. There's a feature called "Fulton" this is basically a sky hook sort of thing. You can apply this to Containers with raw materials, vehicles or enemy soldiers... poor guys, hehe! When you deploy the fulton, the object or person of your choosing is sent skywards and transported to your base! There are a ton of blueprints to be found in this big open world to improve your outfits, weapons and gadgets. In short, you can really lose yourself in this world because there is a lot you can do!
Holy mother of bases!
The base in Metal Gear is called Motherbase, or MOB (Mobile Operation Base) for short. All the stuff you fulton from the world to your base actually arrives here! You need to sort out your Research & Development department en process all the stuff that you found. Use materials to craft new gadgets or use them as currency to add new areas to your base like... a Petting Zoo, for instance? or a hospital? Well, we've got to think about the greater good, so a Petting Zoo it is! The cool thing is that everything you find and send to your base gets delivered there. That means there's a bigger bond with the place then just a place where you select your new mission! you can even throw a cool color on the base! Paint it Hot Rod red and customize it with a cool emblem? No problem! A bit further in the game the multiplayer option unlocks. Which means you can have even more bases called FOB (Forward Operation Base) These bases can be kitted out with security cameras, guards or drones. All kinds of high tech stuff you need to research first. More bases means quicker and more resources! BUT when you use your FOB, other players can invade them and try to steal your loot! oh no... But the cool thing is when they fail! Or, if you intercept them and then plunder their base instead! Yarr..!
Two's company, Three's a crowd
The companions in the game vary a lot! from a simple horse to a chick who's barely wearing any clothes and doesn't speak! Yes, gentlemen; you read that correctly. But, let's get not linger on that, shall we? I was wandering in some sort of jungle in the game and I saw a dead wolf mother with a cub howling at her corpse.. so sad... But when the cub noticed me he started to follow me and kept barking at me.. so I threw one of my balloon decoys on the ground and he started to play with it... the damn dog nearly gave my location away! When I finished my side-mission he somehow found me again! Then in a cutscene Big Boss said "you're a persistent fellow aren't you" and fultonned the cub. Then when you come back to Motherbase from time to time, you can play with the cub and watch him grow.. and eventually when he's fully grown use him as a companion as well! DDOG. There's so much depth in each en every one of the companions even though you don't meet them all in the main storyline!
Awesomess all 'round!
Amazing! This game just has it all. Tons of features, big open worlds, a lot of choices to make, a very intense story and the overall experience of a solid 3rd person stealth/shooter. I really recommend you play this game, even if you have never played or didn't like a previous Metal Gear game. Trust me, this game will truly blow your mind! Writing about this game makes me want to play it again even though I just finished it. In short, if you have PSplus+ grab this gem!
Anyway, let's wrap this up, because I really have to be off! I'm going to fulton some more unsuspecting soldiers together with my half naked chick!(who is from Limburg, Netherlands btw!) This, for me, was THE PSplus+ game of October 2017! So, without further ado, Herr doktor is leaving ze building! (laughs maniacally and sneaks off into the shadows...)
