CRASH TEAM RACING NITRO-FUELED
By Tom "TomBsTone" Bronneberg on July 9, 2019
Back in the year 1999, Naughty Dog released a fourth title in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, Crash Team Racing (CTR). At that moment in time, many developers tried to compete with the all mighty Mario Kart but none of their games really came close to the perfection that was Nintendo's battle racing blockbuster... except for this one! You see, Naughty Dog had a different plan and mixed an awesome Karting experience with the ludicrous characters from the Crash Bandicoot universe. And did so with great success. CTR was released, and a cult classic was born.
Now, 20 Years later, Naughty Dog had the ludicrous idea to re-releases the game as Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. And believe me when I tell you that this re-release adds so much more to the already cool game; I'll probably need 3 reviews to write everything down for you. Wow, what a return! That's it, I can't keep this to myself any longer. I know I might spoil the clue to this review, but it just needs to be said; This game is awesome!
On a sunny day, somewhere in the Crash Bandicoot universe, a mysterious spaceship arrives. Nitrous Oxide has come to destroy our planet. Thankfully he is so kind to give us all a fighting chance, or dare I say "driving chance". You see, Nitrous calls himself the best racer in the Galaxy, and is travelling far and wide to meet the best racers in the Universe. He offers Crash and his friends a chance to race against him in a high-stakes, winner takes all, rally! So get ready and let the racing commence!
CTR has so many options, it's hard for me to list them all, but the main focus when you start the game is the Story or Adventure Mode, as they have called it. In this mode, you will face off against Nitrous Oxide and race for the very survival off the planet. But you will need to get past all other contenders first. Travelling through different locations, all with their own race tracks, you will need to challenge the Champions of each location for the right to call yourself "best racer on the planet". After you succeed in acquiring this title, Nitrous Oxide himself will come down from his spaceship to race against you, the planet's Champion. Besides the Adventure mode, there are also a single player mode and local co-op for up to 4 players. Both modes come with single races, championships and battle arenas. And, of course, the game also features a time trial option for the hardcore racers among us.
Naughty Dog has tried to duplicate the original CTR game, so gamers from around the globe can get a nostalgic blast from the past when playing. The original tracks are all there and are an exact duplicate of the original. well, in layout that is. In 20 years, we have come a long way and they have not left any stone unturned. The game looks superb, stunning graphics, great special effects, funny sceneries and so much more. The developers have also been so kind to give us a plethora of new tracks and racers to choose from.
Keeping the original game in mind, this revamp cannot begin to be compared to the old version. I mean, come on; original Playstation graphics vs Playstation 4 Pro graphics (if you own one, of course)... that's not a fair fight! Luckily, the feel, playability and, most importantly, fun is exactly the same. Boosting your way through the original Crash Circuits is a blast. The new tracks offer a lot of variety and fun. Ranging from farms to castles and from dungeons to futuristic neon sky ways. The developers went all out with the background animations, and I highly suggest you take the time to view all of them. Trust me, it's really worth it!
Besides all of the races and battles, you can also customize your characters and your rides. And when I say customise, I mean really customise. Characters have multiple looks and costumes, and the racing cars have different body types, wheels, decals, colours and stickers. All of this stylish goodness can be unlocked by simply playing the game. No cash is needed, thank god... or I mean thank Naughty Dog.
CTR is one of the best Kart games I've ever played, and yes that includes Super Mario Kart. The sheer volume of content in this game is bordering on ridiculous. And, it seems, we only just begun. This month, the developers have added a new game option: "Grand Prix". With this addition to the game, you can unlock tiers of challenges to earn Nitrous Points that unlock even more content. New racers , Karts and items to customise. Each grand Prix also comes with its own brand new Track. I mean come on.. This is getting ridiculous... "Uka Uka"
